Lecture
Meredith has produced a multi-media lecture called "Women, Pop Music and Pornography" that looks at representations of women pop stars in the current deregulated media environment.

The presentation reveals the large corporate ownership of pornography and its interests in portraying women in ways that promote pornography. It presents clips of popular music videos and images that we have seen time and time again, and pinpoints how collectively they contribute to an overall mainstreaming of pornography.

Both during and after the lecture, students are given the opportunity to ask questions and voice their opinion.

Testimonials
"Meredith LeVande's presentation on women and pop music is thought-provoking, engaging, and even shocking. The images and information she provided truly forced our students (and some faculty) to reconsider their views on the current music industry and the role of women within it." - Lyn A. Blanchfield, PhD, Gender and Women's Studies Program Coordinator, Le Moyne College

"Pop music and pornography -- two industries that thrive on spotlighting the sexual degradation of women and perverting it as the sexual liberation of women. Meredith LeVande clears the lens of Big Media's spotlight, shedding unfiltered truth to young women who've matured in the sexual saturation of American culture. She reveals a notion that the feminist movement has not peaked, but rather, has been re-masked under the continual change of projection from the media. Whether they agree, disagree, or are dealing with the onset of shock, listeners receive an urgent invitation to challenge thoughts of their own, of corporations, and of readily-accepting American society." - Christina J. Hopely, Assistant to Dean for Student Life, Chestnut Hill College

"[Your] program was every bit as wonderful and enlightening as I had hoped. I would love to have you back on campus for a specific class. Your message is critical and it is so important for young and old to hear. I think that you and Jean Kilbourne address some of the most important underlying issues of the violence against women so prevalent in our society." - Donna Tuites, Coordinator of Office of Women's Affairs, University of Delaware

"Meredith LeVande presented a slide presentation and lecture to my Introductory Psychology classes. It was outstanding, and as I raised my hand during the discussion period, I said, 'Thank you for pulling all of the pieces of the Psychology puzzle together that I have spent so much of my energy, psyche and soul teaching my students this entire year! Thank you and thank you for doing it so beautifully, tactfully and eloquently.' Meredith is professional and is a catalyst for consciousness awareness. Her presentation is a great reinforcer for classical and operant conditioning, modeling, socio-cultural influences on our youth, and the money-making machinery called ‘media’. If she doesn’t visit your campus, your students will miss out on an excellent opportunity and experience." - Leslie Bridges Mangano, Associate Professor of Psychology
Jamestown Community College

"Meredith LeVande's presentation will make men and women think. She poses a profound comparison of the porn industry and popular media. I feel that that this presentation benefits college students everywhere who are bombarded by a sexually explicit media culture. She opens the door for necessary discussion and was interesting and approachable. A must-see presentation for all those who aspire to work in the media industry." - Chanel Cathey, Student and President of Women in Communications, Fordham University, Rose Hill Campus

"I absolutely loved your lecture. ... It is very sad that we as college students, the leaders for the future, have to live in such a disturbing and formulaic media universe. I believe that media literacy will be the next civil rights movement and it is very important to create awareness. As media shows, visual appeal is the greatest form to spark our synapses. Your presentation really highlighted the contrasts of the virtual and the reality. Great Q&A session too! Keep going despite the opposition!" - Shadiyah Lim, Student, Fordham University, Rose Hill Campus

"I am speechlessly enlightened. I'm not sure how to wrap my mind around everything, but once I do, I know that it will be a tremendous and genuine truth. This was truly educational." - Mallory Rozema, Student, Fordham University, Rose Hill Campus

"Your presentation was a great explanation of what our generation is experiencing in this society. Throughout these years I have been completely numb to music and pornography. Society has grown with watching this junk on television that seeing women expose themselves is seen as natural. The slides you have shown us helped me, as well as the rest of the people viewing the show, better understand how women are seen in the media." - Hilda Morfi, Student, Fordham University, Rose Hill Campus

"Your lecture just confirmed all the issues that I have contemplated constantly, but never acted on. This is a problem that is affecting all ages of both male and female, including my 9-year-old nephew. It is a very disheartening issue and I thank you for actually doing something about it." - Krisley Alesna, Student, Fordham University, Rose Hill Campus

"Truly enlightening. ..." - John Hilario, Student, Queensborough Community College

"I think your presentation was an eye opener." - Robert Hieuw, Student, Queensborough Community College

"A reality check for a sex-saturated society, and a look at what telecomm deregulation can do." - Alex Yule, Student, Middlebury College

"A testament to the inequalities that exist today. Wow!" - Evan Thompson, Student, Middlebury College

"[Meredith's] presentation spurred many wonderful classroom discussions, and I have gotten excellent feedback from numerous staff and faculty members." - Nadejda Razi, Coordinator of Women’s Programs, Landmark College

"Meredith's presentation was both informative and entertaining. Although one might understand that these negative forces are at work within our society, her presentation brings them to the forefront in a humorous, but serious, way that cannot be ignored or pushed aside. I would recommend this presentation to anyone." - Erin Wheeler, Vice President of Women and Gender Studies Club, St. John Fisher College

"The video and sound clips used throughout the Power Point presentation were thoughtful and engaging. The music and media clips included showed the care to which (Meredith) constructed the presentation as the excerpts were current and relevant to the lives of our students. The images and music on the screen are the same media students have in their apartments, watch on TV, and listen to in their iPods and personal stereos." - Ew Quimbaya-Winship, Educational Program Coordinator, Rochester Institute of Technology Women's Center

“With ease and intention, Meredith LeVande invigorates your view on women and clarifies the perspectives media projects on society with a topic that is compelling, startling and intelligent. Her presentation is enlightening, thought provoking, and empowering. Meredith’s manner and well-researched message are well received by a diverse crowd of students, faculty, and staff.” - Misty L. McIntyre, Assistant Director for Student Development & Programs, The College of New Rochelle
